Suspect arraigned in shooting of NYPD officer
The man accused of shooting an NYPD officer in Bushwick has been arraigned on attempted murder charges today.
Luis Ortiz, 21, stood before a judge at the Brooklyn Criminal Courthouse for allegedly shooting officer Kevin Brennan, 29, in the back of the head at point-blank range Tuesday night.
Brennan is currently recovering at Bellevue Hospital. Doctors are conducting tests to see if he will have any long-term physical damage. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said surveillance video showed Brennan in a headlock, then being shot in an alcove and lying motionless as Ortiz fled the scene.
Prosecutor Lewis Liberman called the shooting an evil act by an evil person. He said it was an assassination attempt, but defense attorney Eric Poulos argued that there's no significant proof his client was the gunman.
Prosecutors say forensics show that the bullet from the officer's skull matches the gun found at the crime scene.
Ortiz is being held without bail. He is due back in court next Monday. If convicted, Ortiz could face a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison.
