Talks between Baumann Bus Company and the drivers' union broke down Tuesday night, forcing some districts to take action.
Freeport School District says it sent out a request for proposal to other bus companies. They will decide Monday whether to cancel their contract with Baumann.
"They're not fulfilling their contract, they're not supplying the buses they're supposed to," says Freeport School Board President Michael Pomerico. "We have 48 bus routes and unfortunately they're not able to supply 48 right now."
Rockville Centre has also decided to have all of its transportation provided by Guardian Bus until further notice as a contingency plan.
The strike is also affecting hundreds of students and parents in Baldwin and Hicksville.
Parents told News 12 that the current situation has been burdensome.
One parent told News 12 that she has to wake up at 6 a.m. to get her three children to three separate schools on time. Another parent said her boss's patience is "wearing out" after multiple days out of work.
Some parents have had no choice but to send a taxi to pick their kids up at school.
"It's harder on kids who have parents who don't have a car. And I feel bad for them," said parent Evelyn Almonte.
The bus company and the union are not scheduled to meet again until Nov. 28.
