Teen accused of setting fatal fire testifies in court
The Brooklyn teen accused of starting a fire that killed an NYPD officer testified in court Tuesday.
Marcell Dockery took the stand at Brooklyn Supreme Court, telling the jury that he did not start the fire that killed NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra on April 6, 2014.
Inside the courtroom, Dockery remained calm while his defense attorney and the prosecutors asked him questions as to his whereabouts on the day of the fire.
Prosecutors tried to prove that Dockery had an addiction to playing with fire his whole life. However, Dockery maintained his innocence, saying he was coerced by detectives to admit to the crime after hours of interrogation.
After court let out, the prosecutor said he was not surprised that Dockery had testified.
The defense attorney, Jesse Young, said he could not be prouder of his client.
"I think he was calm, I think he didn't let his buttons get pushed, I think he was measured and I think he was candid and honest," said Young.
Dockery is charged with felony murder, assault and arson. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
The trial will resume Wednesday afternoon.
