A group of teenagers is studying Brooklyn's urban environment on behalf of a nonprofit group in a bid to boost the borough's green spaces.
The El Puente Greenlight District dispatched the teens around the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to examine things like air quality, noise levels and park usage.
The teens have already recorded some surprising data.
They say they've found parks on the south side of the BQE rank among the worst in terms of air pollution. The highway also causes heightened noise pollution.
The group plans to use the research to advocate for green-space improvements in the area.
The long-term goal is to see the proposed "B-Q Green" project to connect parks on the north and south sides of the highway into one so-called super park.
Advocates argue that the hundreds of additional trees would offset air pollution.
