Tenants in Crown Heights rallied Thursday to accuse landlords of poor treatment and pushing them out in order to increase rents in the increasingly popular -- and crowded -- neighborhood.
"Hey hey! Ho ho! These slumlords have got to go," protesters chanted at the rally, outside the 1030 Carroll St. apartment building.
The tenants say that once low-paying residents move out, the landlords renovate and subdivide their apartments and then re-list them for higher rent.
The protesters singled out Ephraim Fruchthandler, who owns the Carroll Street building and has been criticized in similar rallies in recent months.
They accuse him of neglecting damage and maintenance in their apartments while investing heavily in vacant units to make them more appealing on housing websites like Zillow.
