Tenants in Sunset Park are trying to cope with deplorable living conditions that they say have only further deteriorated for the past two years.
Residents living in three buildings along 46th Street say they are forced to live with a lack of heat, electrical issues and unfinished repairs, on top of bed bugs, mold, destroyed flooring, and holes in the walls and ceiling.
Community activist Dennis Flores helped translate the frustration felt by tenants, many of whom only speak Spanish. He says the buildings have a long history of changing hands from one management company to the next, making it hard to track down the right person for repairs.
Floes adds that the apartments have been in foreclosure limbo, and will soon be auctioned off the highest bidder. In the meantime, a judge recently appointed a temporary manager to upkeep the homes, which tenants hope will finally improve their living situation.
