Thousands attend wake for fallen NYPD officer
Thousands of police officers from across the country and as far away as Canada were in Bethpage to pay respects to an NYPD officer from Long Island who was killed in the line of duty.
Officer Brian Moore, of Massapequa, was shot Saturday in Queens Village as he was trying to question a man about a gun. Police arrested Demetrius Blackwell in the shooting. He is facing first-degree murder charges.
The NYPD has announced a $17,500 reward for information that leads to the suspect's conviction.
Thousands lined up for the afternoon wake at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, including fellow officers and civilians who wanted to pay their respects to the fallen 25-year-old officer.
Officer Moore graduated from Plainedge High School and was living with his parents in Massapequa. Blue ribbons line the neighborhood in his memory.
"We're a tight community. When something like this happens, it affects everybody," said Peter Vogelsberg, of Plainedge.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Seaford.
