Thousands of NYPD members gathered Friday to honor the life and legacy of fallen officer 26-year-old Alexis Martinez.
Martinez and his father were found fatally shot in their home last week in an apparent murder-suicide. It's believed his father pulled the trigger. Officials tell News 12 that the father suffered from mental health issues.
Friends and colleagues of Martinez described him as special, kind and someone with a great smile. The NYPD not only raved about his character, but also how quickly he moved up the ranks from rookie to narcotics. News 12 is told he was going to be promoted to a detective.
Martinez's impact on the community and the department was evident Friday. And now, his contributions will help seven Bronx students.
"The high school is going to give out seven scholarships under his name for kids in the Bronx," says Alejandro Zayas, director of public relations at the New York Chaplain Task Force.
Martinez has been laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery, and the department says it will continue to support his family throughout this difficult time.
