The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, founded to help first responders and their families in honor of a firefighter who died responding to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, announced a fundraiser Friday to benefit the three children left behind after the assassination of their mother, an NYPD officer.
On its website, the foundation called for donations from around the country to benefit the children of Officer Miosotis Familia. At a news conference in Manhattan on Friday, the group announced that at least $130,000 had already been raised. Also at the news conference was the widow of NYPD Detective Rafael Ramos, who was similarly gunned down along with his partner, Detective Wenjian Liu, in a 2014 ambush in Bed-Stuy.
Other groups and individuals are also stepping up to join the effort, including the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation, the NYPD and Detective Liu's widow. Both widows said they would donate $5,000 each. Friday also marked the anniversary of another deadly attack that killed five police officers in Dallas, and the Dallas Police Association announced a $2,500 donation for Familia's children.
As News 12 has reported, the 48-year-old, 12-year veteran was shot once in the head at point blank range through the window of a marked police vehicle earlier this week. Police later killed the suspect, Alexander Bonds, a 34-year-old parolee who had posted anti-police messages on his Facebook page and sought psychological help just days before the slaying.
"Our dear and amazing mom was selfless and sacrificed so much for us," Familia's oldest daughter said in a statement. "She was incredibly funny. She was so stunningly beautiful and always had a piece of wisdom to share with us."
Wake services for Familia will be held Monday, July 10 at the World Changers Church on the Grand Concourse from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and then again from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The funeral is scheduled at the same location on Tuesday, July 11 at 11 a.m.
