New York City teachers returned to their school buildings last week, and as of Sunday, the teachers union said that at least 24 staff members tested positive for COVID-19 at 24 schools across the city.
The Department of Education confirmed that there were COVID-19 cases at P.S. 811X in the Bronx, and P.S. 1 and M.S. 88 in Brooklyn.
The original opening date for schools was Sept. 10, but after push back from educators, it was moved to Sept. 21.
The COVID-19 cases have many wondering what would have happened with the spread of the virus if the school opened on its original date.
According to the United Federation of Teachers, the 24 cases are spread across 24 schools in all five boroughs.
UFT also tweeted what appears to be an internal letter from the principal of P.S. 361 in Brooklyn to staff, saying a staff member contracted the virus.
The union says is COVID-19 doesn't improve, it is prepared to prevent schools from opening next week.
News 12 reached out to the city's Department of Education and P.S. 361, but has not heard back yet.
