Video of a K-9 taking down a woman in a 2014 incident has led to the reopening of an investigation into the dog’s Tuckerton police handler.
The 2014 incident was caught on camera. Police were called to the scene for reports of a domestic disturbance. A woman got into her car and drove off when they arrived, according to officials.
Police say that Cpl. Justin Cherry orders the woman, Wendy Tucker, out of her car after a brief pursuit. Video shows officers pulling Tucker from her vehicle and then Cherry orders his dog Gunner to take the woman down. Gunner is seen holding on to Tucker for 30 seconds before finally being called off.
Ocean County prosecutors originally dropped the case against Cherry after attorney Tracy Riley claimed evidence was being withheld and that a witness gave misleading testimony.
But the case was reopened after the video of the incident was released this week. Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato says that he will leave the matter to a grand jury on how to move forward. The case is expected to be heard in 2018.
Cherry faces charges of official misconduct and aggravated assault.
Tucker was cited for driving with a suspended license after the incident.
