Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that New Yorkers around the city are stepping up to help in the fight against coronavirus.
He said two companies in particular, Layfayette 148 and Crye Precision, are using their skills to help make surgical gowns for people on the front lines.
The companies are using Brooklyn Navy Yard as their headquarters where the gowns are being made.
By the end of day, it is estimated more than 9,000 gowns will be made.
Lafayette 148 is a high-end fashion brand and Crye Precision makes gear for the military.
The companies are also making masks and are expected to make as many as 320,000 over the next month.
According to the mayor, a projected 2.5 million gowns are expected to be used this week.
The mayor also thanked President Donald Trump for the 600,000 N95 masks given to New York City. He said PPE is still needed across the city, as well as medical personnel.
The mayor also addressed discrimination against Chinese-Americans across the city. He urged New Yorkers to report any biased crimes they witness.
As the fight against coronavirus continues, the mayor says the city will be looking for future pop-up hospital locations.
