Water main break causes flooding, water to be shut off in Fordham
A water main break right off the Grand Concourse left a nearby building flooded Thursday, while the surrounding neighborhood was left without water for parts of the day.
Jinny Teaecora woke up Thursday to find the basement of 2076 Creston Ave. under water. By mid-afternoon, the super managed to get the water level down to just inches.
Meanwhile, crews worked outside to fix the source of the flooding.
A gaping hole that closed down a section of East 180th Street was caused by a water main break beneath the road, according to Department of Environmental Protection workers.
The DEP workers posted signs on surrounding buildings on Creston Avenue from Burnside Avenue to East 181st Street, warning residents that water could be shut off while contractors and Con Edison crews worked through the afternoon.
A DEP employee said that what happened is a product of when someone opens a fire hydrant improperly. The employee said not only does it cause water to flow forcefully, it also allows the pressure to build underground, which could lead to a leak in the water line.
Contractors hope to have the street repaired and water fully restored by Friday.
