Westover parents race to raise money for new classrooms
Westover Magnet Elementary School students are preparing for a big day Wednesday as they head to their temporary school for this first time.
While mold remediation continues, the city is spending money to get students and teachers feeling comfortable in their temporary surroundings.  Some parents are also raising money to help.
Parents say they want their kids to be comfortable and have an easy transition to their new school, the former Pitney Bowes office building. Several parents started a GoFundMe in hopes of brightening the once-office walls, to look more like classroom walls.
"To be able to have some decorations up, that stuff will take time, but I think for them to be able to have that will help them ease in a little bit quicker," says Gloria Domiziano.
By Monday night, the GoFundMe was already halfway to its $5,000 goal.
"There's so much that goes into, especially the younger kids’ classrooms, when you think of how they learn through play and things of that nature,” says Domiziano. “So even $5 can make a difference."
School staff says the kids will spend the entire day Tuesday at Chelsea Piers for a field trip before starting classes on Wednesday.
Several information sessions will be held at the building Tuesday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
