This Sunday's Academy Awards will have a unique connection to Brooklyn: the award trophies were gold-plated in Williamsburg.
The Oscar for this year was dipped in gold at Epner Technology, a shop that was chosen thanks to its unique laser-gold technology that NASA also uses on spacecraft.
The process of plating is called electrodeposition, and the 24-karat pure gold that is used is made in a way that assures it will stand the test of time.
The Oscars had been made out of tin for decades, but the Academy wanted to switch back to the original feel of the statuette.
The statuettes weigh in at 8 pounds, and with all the gold contained in it, could be worth up to $150,000.
