Woman arraigned after daughter dies in fire
The Brooklyn mother accused of leaving her 2-year-old daughter unattended in a Bed-Stuy apartment where a fire killed her entered no plea at her arraignment Wednesday night.
Leila Aquino, 20, allegedly left her daughter, Kaleenah Muldrow, alone in a Monroe Street apartment that caught fire Tuesday around 6 a.m.
Police charged Aquino with reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police sources say Aquino was out with a friend when the fire broke out.
Firefighters were unaware that anyone was left in the building until Aquino returned three hours later and alerted them that Muldrow was inside, according to authorities. They searched the building and found the girl dead under a bed.
Investigators say Aquino told them she had left her daughter with a baby sitter. They say she claimed to have arranged for a baby sitter, but say phone records do not show any such contact.
Aquino's lawyer asked for her to be released without bail so she could attend her daughter's funeral, but the judge, appearing unmoved, set bail at $10,000.
Her next court appearance is Feb. 29.
