A Brooklyn woman is helping to bring the community together through arts and culture.
Leonora Bulychova is the founder of the Aelita Club, an organization that hosts various events for immigrants, seniors and youth in the community to encourage unity and companionship.
"A lot of people are feeling lonely sometimes. They don't know where to go,” said Ari Kagan, Democratic District Leader. “Sometimes it's a language barrier, sometimes they're shy and they don't know how to connect with other people."
Sunday marked the first appreciation event of the Aelita Club, where the Baku Restaurant in Gravesend hosted music and dance as a presentation highlighting the accomplishments of the club.
"This country has given everything to my family -- everything to live a happy life. So it's only one issue, how do I give back?" says Bulychova, who credits her idea for the club to her experience living in the U.S. after leaving her native Belarus nearly 30 years ago.
