The Women’s Health Protection Act which aimed to preserve access to abortions nationwide failed in the senate today with a vote of 49 to 51.

This followed last week’s bombshell leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that showed the court’s conservative majority could soon overturn Roe v. Wade.

The failed bill, sponsored by Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, aimed to codify the right to access abortion into federal law. It also guaranteed that health providers would perform abortion services.

“I’m not surprised but I am disappointed,” said Justine Dowden, co-chair of BK Forge, an organization aiming to protect reproductive rights. “I think it is really symbolic of how decisive the issue has become.”
