Wounded NYPD officer in coma after surgery
An NYPD officer is still fighting for his life two days after being shot in the face while sitting in an unmarked police car in Queens.
Officials say 25-year-old Brian Moore, of Long Island, is in a medically-induced coma following surgery. He is listed in critical but stable condition at Jamaica Hospital for what court papers describe as "severe injuries to his skull and brain."
According to police, 35-year-old Demetrius Blackwell is being held without bail on two charges of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Records show that he previously served five years in prison for attempted murder.
Blackwell is accused of firing two shots at Moore and his partner, who were on duty and in plainclothes when they noticed him suspiciously adjusting his waistband and stopped him at around 6 p.m. Saturday in Queens Village. Moore's partner, identified as Erik Jansen, was not injured.
Moore joined the police department back in July 2010. His cousin is also an officer, and both his father and uncle are retired NYPD sergeants.
