In 2019, the state Department of Transportation began major construction in Hunts Point. Now, residents and the local community board say the traffic caused by the construction has gotten out of hand. 

The goal of the construction was to provide direct access to the Hunts Point Market from both the Bruckner Expressway and Sheridan Boulevard. 

The project is called Hunts Point Access Improvement Plan. Residents call the $1.7 billion project a nightmare.

The construction has caused a domino effect, and parents and teachers say the traffic is dangerous for pedestrians. 

Community Board 2 has been working with the Department of Transportation on ways to cut down on traffic, like adding traffic officers and opening up additional lanes on busy days. 

The Department of Transportation tells News 12 in a statement, “Recently completed work allowed the re-opening of many previously impacted areas on the Bruckner Expressway, Bruckner Boulevard and other local streets. We are listening, and will continue to have ongoing conversations with the community and elected officials in our efforts to address concerns.”
