Two people, including one firefighter, are in the hospital following a fire on Saturday afternoon in Bay Ridge.
The FDNY said the firefighter was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. One tenant was taken to an area hospital after he had to be rescued from his apartment building.
Heavy flames and thick black smoke could be seen shooting from the building near the corner of 91st Street and 3rd Avenue.
The FDNY said the fire started around 3:30 p.m. inside of a second-floor apartment.
One resident told News 12 that there are nine units in the complex.
It was unclear exactly how many apartments were impacted as of Saturday night.
Multiple neighbors said that the man who lives in the apartment where the fire started is a senior citizen who lives alone and is well known in the community.
“He’s very patriotic,” said resident Adriana Dickson. “He’s very, very fit for this country. He’s a good man. He plays the national anthem like every single day, around 2-2:30 [p.m.] after schooltime. It’s always blasting in his window.”
The Red Cross was on scene to assist those in need.
A cause of the fire was not immediately known.
