One of the three suspects charged with murdering an NYPD detective took the stand in his own defense Monday.
Robert Ellis, Dexter Bostic and Lee Woods are all facing murder charges in the shooting death of Detective Russel Timoshenko. In July of 2007, both Timoshenko and his partner were shot while stopping a suspicious SUV in Prospects Lefferts Garden. Timoshenko died from his injuries. His partner survived.
During his 90-minute testimony, Ellis denied he fired any shots during the incident. He claims he was the one driving the stolen BMW. Ellis testified that he had stopped the car thinking his friends would get out, but instead he heard shots being fired. He adds that he later skipped town because he feared for his safety after the shootings.
Woods is expected to take the stand next.
