A fire in Midwood left one person in critical condition and a firefighter hurt Thursday morning, according to the FDNY.

Fire officials say the flames broke out around 7:10 a.m. inside a fourth-floor apartment at 1921 Avenue I, between East 19th Street and Ocean Avenue. Crews from 12 units — about 60 firefighters and EMTs — arrived within minutes and had the fire under control by 7:59 a.m.

One person was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital–North in critical condition. A firefighter suffered minor injuries while helping put out the flames.

By the afternoon, fire investigators were back inside the building, clearing items out through a window as they searched for what may have sparked the fire.

Neighbors say the scene was chaotic as smoke poured from the top floor.

“I smelt the fire first, and I heard somebody crying out for someone named David,” said resident Ariel Matthews, who lives on the second floor. “It was so sad to see … this building has been through a lot this past year or two. I just hope he’s OK and that something like this doesn’t happen again.”

The Red Cross says it’s helping one family of three adults who were displaced by the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
