They’re saying it’s the first Black-owned business to open in Brooklyn Heights, and this new doughnut shop is the talk of the town.
Cloudy Donut Co. offers 44 flavors, with eight new ones each week. The owner, Derrick Faulcon, opened his first location in Baltimore before coming to New York City last year.
But when you come into Cloudy Donut Co., you’re getting much more than 100% vegan doughnuts and coffee.
“My goal was to create certainty for the Black man,” said Faulcon. “If you own something, you can certainly mobilize yourself, you certainly can take care of your family, you certainly can hire your people.”
Faulcon was formerly incarcerated a long time ago. Even though he served his last sentence 10 years ago, he still gets asked about it all the time.
"I already did my time so when you already did your time and people come asking how it was, it's a rehashing of trauma,” said Derrick, who is now focusing on the future and not the past. "That's really what it's all about. It's about creating something that can touch everyone to have a conversation about anyone. Once you do that, you start changing the world, donut by donut."
Faulcon is looking forward to opening another location in Manhattan by the end of 2024.
