A raging fire tore through a Bedford-Stuyvesant building Sunday, leaving some tenants with nothing.
Fire officials say the three-alarm fire started around 12:30 a.m. at 977 Jefferson Ave. About 140 firefighters took two hours to extinguish the flames.
One person and a firefighter suffered minor injuries; they were both taken to Kings County Hospital. The Red Cross is assisting displaced families.
"It's devastating," says resident Shirlee Portee. "I heard [my son] say, 'There's a fire in the hall,' and I just jumped up." Portee escaped with her children through a fire escape.
Fire officials say the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
