According to the NYPD, he was shot at East 16th Street and Avenue J at around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
Donkor's mother Daniella Boakye says her son was at a football game with a friend when the shooting happened. She says it's believed the shooter was targeting someone near him.
Donkor is a promising high school basketball player, now in a hospital bed. The bullet is still in his back as Boakye says doctors say it's too risky to remove it. Originally, she tells News 12 doctors were unsure if he'd walk, but he has since regained feeling in his legs. She says she doesn't think he'll walk and play basketball again, she knows it.
“At first, it wasn't easy. But now, because I have trust in God that every whatever the situation is, it's going to change because there is nothing hard for God to do it," said Boakye.
