New federal immigration bills could impact hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers if enacted.

The two proposals were discussed in a conversation held by city Immigration Commissioner Bitta Mostofi Thursday. 

Those bills are the U.S. Citizenship Act and the Promise Act of 2021, which have been proposed since President Joe Biden has taken office. 

In New York City, almost half a million residents would benefit from the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. 

The proposed bill would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain work permits more easily, benefitting both the immigrants and the city’s economy and grant them temporary lawful status. 

As of now, undocumented immigrants account for over $15 billion in earning and work some of the jobs that keep the city running. 

The American Dream and Promise Act of 2021 could benefit up to 100,000 New Yorkers. 

There are currently 81,000 dreamers who could be eligible for immediate lawful permanent resident status if the bill passes. Those dreamers must have been in the country since Jan.1 of this year and under 18 years old when they arrived -- along with other requirements.
