State emergency management officials announced they’re working on a new hurricane plan for the first time in over a decade.

A new study will help local governments and coastal communities to prepare for future storms, according to state officials.

The last time the state’s hurricane evacuation plan was updated was back in 2009. Following devastating storms like Sandy, Irene, Lee and Ida, officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local emergency management partners are joining to create the state’s new plan.

The plan is aimed at helping all New Yorkers understand how to prepare for tropical storms and proper evacuation procedures.

The study to create the framework of this plan will take place in five phases, with the first one to be completed by the end of 2023.
