A big victory for a slice of Bushwick came on Friday, as one block on Linden Street and Bushwick Avenue is now recognized as a historic district.

The block has 32 brownstone houses that will now be permanently preserved, thanks to a unanimous decision from the Landmarks Preservation Commission that labeled the block as the Linden Street Historic District.

"Although Bushwick is classified as a gentrifying neighborhood, a lot of us are still here fighting to preserve everything as is," said Brooklyn Councilmember Jennifer Gutierrez. "This designation starts to set a tone for how different parts of the neighborhood can fight to have a landmark status finally."

The brownstones were built in the late-19th century, ranging in styles from Neo-Grec, Queen Anne and Renaissance Revival.

Residents hope that the preservation will allow them to keep a piece of their history in a rapidly changing neighborhood.
