The Brooklyn Bridge is turning 140 years old next week. City officials and German delegates joined together for a celebratory walk to celebrate its importance to the city for well over a century.

New York City Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez and a German delegation took the walk across the bridge. A German engineer named John Roebling designed the bridge, which opened in 1883 and has seen many upgrades over the years.

There is currently an $800 million rehabilitation project that includes restoring the stones on the bridge to their original appearance, and Rodriguez even awarded an original piece of the bridge to the Consul General.
