At least two people were taken into custody during a protest on the third anniversary of George Floyd's death in Manhattan Thursday night.
Social justice advocates rallied outside city hall calling on lawmakers to hold a hearing to pass the Community Power Act. They say it was introduced nearly a year ago with hopes of replacing the current Complaint Review Board with one that's made up of elected civilians.
Thursday marked three years since a white officer pressed his knee to Floyd's neck, a Black man. Floyd's death sparked a demand for change nationwide.
If the Community Power Act is passed, they say the bill would give community members the authority to discipline officers who commit misconduct. It will also replace the district attorney with an independent prosecutor when police officer's commit crimes.
