New traffic lights in Brooklyn are big win for community, neighbors say

The city has given the green light on the installation of new traffic lights across Brooklyn, including one in Bushwick that has local residents celebrating the win.
Neighbors say they fought for nine years to get a traffic light at the three-way intersection where Evergreen Avenue and Chauncey Street meet, replacing the stop signs that previously controlled the traffic.
The lights at the intersection started operating three weeks ago. In the last three years, Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez says the spot has seen two accidents.
“Traffic violence is another type of violence,” said Rodriguez. “Let’s look at this light as a light that will continue bringing knowledge, courage, determination.”
Residents say the job isn’t finished, pushing for the commissioner to keep the momentum going and install more traffic lights – with multiple citing the intersection of Hinsdale Street and Dumont Avenue.
The DOT says 15 other intersections will receive brand-new traffic lights or stop signs this summer.
