A Department of Transportation plan to redesign McGuinness Boulevard in an effort to tackle safety concerns is sparking both support and concern in Greenpoint.
The DOT’s proposal would turn two traffic lanes into protected bike lanes or parking spots, and crosswalks would be shortened.
Some residents who voiced their opposition to the plan say it will make the street more congested and impact their businesses.
During a town hall Thursday, the organization Make McGuinness Safe rallied for the safety of the boulevard in support of the redesign plan. Those who support the plan chanted and held signs with the names of people who have died in car crashes along the boulevard.
Make McGuinness Safe joined together for a march Thursday in support of the DOT’s redesign plan, which could be implemented as soon as this year.
