A local nonprofit is getting some needed funds from the state to expand its mission of saving animals.

Kent Animal Shelter has found homes for thousands of rescued dogs and cats since it started operations in the late 1960s.

It was founded on residential property on the Peconic River in Calverton so getting permits for renovations and expansion has always been difficult.

Following 20 years of trying, most of the approvals are in place and Kent Animal Shelter was one of four animal shelters on Long Island that will receive a grant of $200,000.

"The first part of the project will be to knock down the building that was built in 1968," says Pam Green, of Kent Animal Shelter. "We had it architecturally redesigned so that we increased the capacity. We'll have noise mitigation, indoor-outdoor runs of course."

The animal shelter hopes to break ground this summer.

Kent Animal Shelter still needs more money to complete its overhaul. To donate, click here.
