Councilman Salamanca Jr. announces legislation requiring NYPD, sanitation department to tow ghost cars

A new legislation was introduced by City Councilman Rafael Salamanca Jr. Thursday to help crack down on ghost cars and the problem they’re causing in the city.
Salamanca Jr.’s bill would require the NYPD and Sanitation Department to tow cars with phony license plates within 24 to 72 hours.
Towing ghost cars in the city at times can take three to four weeks, so the bill would allow authorities a quicker pace to get rid of these vehicles.
Salamanca says in his district -- District 17 -- several ghost cars have fake Georgia plates on them.
“We saw a fake license plate just standing here!” he said. “I don't want to call it a fake license plate, but it was a vehicle from the state of Georgia, which gives you the speculation which says it may not be a real license plate.
The proposed legislation would also crack down on abandoned trucks and cars in the city.
Salamanca Jr. acknowledged the new legislation would also assist law enforcement as many vehicles that have bogus plates are connected to shootings and other violent crimes. He hopes to get the new legislation passed by the end of the summer.
