New York City officials on Thursday agreed to a settlement with Black Lives Matter protesters who said the NYPD violated their rights during protests in 2020.

The settlement will pay the protesters over $13 million.

The protesters said the NYPD used excessive force, pepper spray and other tactics to control protesters at 18 protests between May 28 and June 4.

"It's a very large payout that the taxpayers are now going to be responsible for as a result of the extreme violence and police misconduct from the way the city policed the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer of 2020,” said attorney Gideon Oliver.

Gideon says around 1,400 eligible protesters will be covered and will receive $9,950 from the city once the settlement is approved by a judge.
