Excessive heat warning issued; cooling centers open across NYC

The Department of Homeless Services is also issuing a Code Red, meaning anyone experiencing homelessness can have access to shelter if they would like it.

New York City has been issued an excessive heat warning - a first for the city since Aug. 13, 2021.

The warning is expected to last through Friday at 8 p.m.

In response to the hot temperatures, cooling centers across the city will be opening at 11 a.m. Thursday through Friday night.

All of the city's intermediate and Olympic-sized pools will be extending their hours through 8 p.m. these next three days.

The Department of Homeless Services is also issuing a Code Red, meaning anyone experiencing homelessness can have access to shelter if they would like it.

Experts say to avoid heat exhaustion, stay hydrated and avoid the sun during the peak hours of the day. They also recommend New Yorkers to stay indoors with air conditioning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the symptoms for heat exhaustion are nausea, heavy sweating, clammy skin and dizziness.
