Officials: Crime in NYC down from last July
Law enforcement leaders report that crime on subways is down almost 10% from last July and 5% overall in 2023.

The New York City Office of Public Safety announced that overall crime in New York City is down 5.5% compared to last July.
City officials attributed this change to a combination of new programs. They report that crime on subways is down almost 10% from last July and 5% overall in 2023, adding that there have only been three years with lower subway crime, excluding during the pandemic in 2020.
"When you swipe your card and you go into the transit system, you have a 1 in 730,000 chance of being a victim of crime," said Justin Meyers, chief of operations for the Office of Public Safety. "In your lifetime, you have a 1 in 15,000 chance of being struck by lightning."
In the Bronx, year-to-date crime is up 4.7%, driven by a 35.2% increase in grand larceny auto cases and a 7.9% increase in felony assault cases. Hate crimes are down 60%, shooting incidents are down 28.7% and transit crimes are down 18.3% in the borough.
In Brooklyn, year-to-date crime is down 4.3%. Shooting incidents are down 27.1%, and hate crimes are down 35.5%.
City officials say that there is still a lot of work to do to ensure that New Yorkers feel as safe as the numbers say.
