A parking lot in Prospect Heights has been chosen by developers to be converted into housing for low-income and homeless seniors.
The 17,000-square-foot lot is only used for city official vehicles, and the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development is looking to put it to better use.
"That means, creating housing for people who need it,” said Ahmed Tigani, first deputy commissioner of HPD. “This is a great example of what we're doing to address the need for our older New Yorkers, our seniors."
The proposed housing development is called Park Edge. It aims to provide seniors with a living space that will immerse themselves in the community, as it is located on the edge of Prospect Park.
"This is the kind of dream that I've dreamt since I was a young girl,” said Olga Jobe, principle of Jobe Development Corporation, the developers behind the project. “What this housing will do is provide a community asset where they can live and rent and rent long term, and not fear about eviction or increasing rents."
The new housing will be at 542 Dean St. . It will not only be a housing site but also a space that will provide services to residents and facilitate healthy living.
