People who want to play basketball at one Coney Island court say the hoops there have been locked up since shots were fired in the area.
Neighbors in the housing complex located at 2750 West 33rd St. say that the rims were locked after a tournament turned violent on Sunday.
Police say that a 33-year-old man was shot in the right leg at the courts.
While neighbors are disheartened by the violence, they’re also upset that the locked basketball rims won’t allow kids to play the game that they love.
D. Chamberz started the Sea Rise Basketball Clinic two years ago, painting the concrete and installing nets to make it a universal space.
He says he’s been rallying with the local precinct and the nearby housing complex’s management to increase security at the court.
A spokesperson for Bay Park ONE-A LLC and Bay Park TWO-A LLC issued a statement saying, "We are proud to have hosted the Sea Rise Basketball Clinic for the past two years and we are looking forward to finding a safe way to complete the program. Since the perpetrator of the incident earlier this week is still at-large, we have been working closely with community stakeholders, together with the NYPD and representatives of the basketball clinic, to prioritize safety and resume the clinic. Those conversations are ongoing and we hope the perpetrator is apprehended soon."
