Bronx community members are calling on New York City to reconsider the use of a lot on 1932 Arthur Ave.

The lot is currently being used to park NYPD police vehicles.

In 2018, Bronx Community Board 6 met with the Department of City Administration Services to talk about how the site could be for public use. The city shared renderings for potential ideas, but in 2019, the NYPD was given approval to use this once vacant lot for their school safety division.

DCAS said the decision was temporary as it worked on a timeline for a permanent community-oriented solution.

Residents of the area say they would like to see it repurposed into something that benefits everyone in the neighborhood.

"It seems to have fallen to the wayside in the past five years. The city came to the board with plans in hands. That means I am optimistic that we could find a good use in the long term," said Rafael Moure-Punnett, district manager of Bronx Community Board 6.

CB6 sent a letter to the Department of City Administration Services asking them to reconsider a long-term plan. In response, DCAS said they would be willing to engage with the community and explore options that optimize the use of city property, while also considering critical operational needs.

Members of CB6 and DCAS will be meeting in the coming weeks to discuss a better plan and hopefully come to a solution on how they can repurpose the lot.
