October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and elected officials and community members teamed up to shine a light on all the survivors who have experienced pain in their relationships.

Powerful voices shared their stories with one another in Crown Heights on Tuesday night as people of all ages were present to learn about domestic violence and help bring awareness to the topic that many say is often overlooked.

The panel, hosted by Councilmember Darlene Mealy, featured experts in the field to share their insights and experiences on the signs, impacts, and resources available to those affected by the pervasive issue.

"I recall when I was a child, my father domestically beat my mother and I didn't understand that... when I asked him why did he hurt mommy he could'nt say anything, so I know from a small child that love should never hurt," said Mealy.

Tuesday's panel also helped connect those in need with resources available for victims of domestic violence.
