Smoke alarms save lives, but many households still don't have them. With the colder months fast approaching, the FDNY is issuing reminders to people on how they can get their hands on a smoke detector for free.

The initiative is a partnership between the Home Fire Campaign/American Red Cross and the FDNY.

"Even as we work to update building codes, even as we tackle, critical new, emerging threats, like lithium-ion batteries we also want to go back to the basics and remind New Yorkers that a working smoke alarm will save your life," said FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.

According to the FDNY, 86 New Yorkers have died in fires citywide this year, and they say that fires are usually on the rise during the winter time.

New Yorkers can request a free smoke alarm here.
