Greenpoint residents have proved how important it is to speak up after changes were made at their local park.

The newly completed renovations at McGolrick Park cost over $2 million to repair many different quality-of-life issues across the green space.

“There were a lot of uneven sidewalks, a lot of trip-and-falls, a lot of overflowing garbage, patchy lawns, so many rats. There was a lot going on in this park,” said state Assembly Member Emily Gallagher.

Gallagher says that thanks to input from nearby community members, an action plan to fix the park was put into place.

The ribbon-cutting to celebrate these new renovations revealed brand-new picnic tables, freshly paved pathways, a dog run, and a modernized irrigation system that combats the flooding that used to overwhelm the park during rainy days.

“We know that we’re only going to be seeing more intense issues in terms of flooding, so being able to get that to work and redo the drainage was critical to this project,” said NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue.

Councilman Lincoln Restler announced that the farmer’s market will now be operating year-round on Sunday mornings, and says there’s already plans in place for the coldest, snowiest days.
