The City Council passed a controversial bill Wednesday to ban solitary confinement in New York City jails.

Mayor Eric Adams responded saying he may veto it, however.

The bill bans the practice of solitary unless there is an emergency where it is permitted for a four-hour "de-escalation" window with check-ins from Department of Correction officers every 15 minutes.

According to the Associated Press, members of the City Council believe that they have enough backing to override a potential Mayor Adams veto.

The #HALTsolitary Campaign is lauding City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and the City Council supermajority who voted in favor of ending solitary confinement.
