Dominican Independence Day is on Feb. 27.

In honor of the day, News 12's Shakti Denis sat down with a Brooklyn woman who is bringing a modern twist to Dominican staples.

Michellet Diaz grew up in Sunset Park. She says that despite the sizeable Dominican community in the neighborhood, she struggled to find street food in the area.

So three years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she opened Antojitos BK on 45th Street and 4th avenue.

They serve all kinds of snacks, fresh juices and hearty meals that really bring alive the flavors one would find on the streets in the Dominican Republic.

"I want our food to not just be known in the Dominican community," said Diaz. "So it's really just putting Dominican Republic street food on the map."
