Angie Carpenter reflects on becoming first woman elected supervisor in Town of Islip history
Angie Carpenter says the key to her success has been being active in the community, believing in herself and not dwelling on the challenges that come with being a trailblazer.

Angie Carpenter has enjoyed three decades of success at the ballot box.
Since 1993, she has been elected as a Suffolk County legislator, county treasurer and since 2015 she has served as Islip Town supervisor – in what has been a historic role.
“Someone said to me, you're making history. I was like, really? I never really thought about it, that in the 300 plus year history of the Town of Islip, that I was the first elected woman supervisor,” said Carpenter.

Carpenter says she only came to that realization as she was about to be sworn into office for the first time as supervisor in 2015.
The Republican from West Islip says she shows the wall of all of the former supervisors, all men, to Girl Scouts when they come to visit. She hopes it will encourage them to pursue anything they want to do when they grow up.
Carpenter says the key to her success has been being active in the community, believing in herself and not dwelling on the challenges that come with being a trailblazer.
Carpenter is term limited as a supervisor, but says she has no plans to retire after leaving office.
