Councilmember Lincoln Restler is leading a charge for more crossing guards in South Williamsburg and Bed-Stuy.

Restler sent a letter to NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban asking for more crossing guards in the South Williamsburg Bed-Stuy area, where he says a disproportionate amount of kids attend private Yeshiva schools.

The letter is co-signed by several other Brooklyn politicians and follows the death of a 10-year-old girl who was hit by a car in the area.

Police say Yitty Wertzberger was walking with a walk signal within the crosswalk.

"These deaths are avoidable and it’s simply a question on if we're prepared to invest in the right street designs that can slow traffic down, if we can invest in the necessary crossing guard staff that will keep kids safe,” Restler said.

Restler also mentioned the proposed Sammy’s Law, named after 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein, who was hit and killed by a van driver in Park Slope in 2013.

The law would allow the city to lower speed limits to 20 mph. Gov. Kathy Hochul confirmed this week that it will make it into this year’s budget.
