A massive fire in Bensonhurst left a number of families homeless and several firefighters injured, according to the FDNY.

Fire officials say that the fire started just after 1 p.m. Tuesday at 2050 71st St. between 20th and 21st avenues. The fire started on the first floor and made its way to the second floor. It was raised to a four-alarm fire just before 3 p.m.

The FDNY is still working to figure out exactly how the fire started. Seven firefighters were hurt as they battled the flames. Four houses were damaged by the fire, and five families were displaced.

City Council Member Susan Zhuang tells News 12 she is actively working with the families who were impacted.

"I want to make the community safe - and everyone affected by this fire, we want to help every single one. We will help them find housing find financial assistance and also food assistance," Zhuang said.

The Red Cross says it has already registered three families.

The Department of Buildings ordered all four homes to sit vacant as they are no longer safe to be inside due to the extensive damage.
