Two community input meetings were held by the city's parks department to take feedback on the construction of two new skate parks.
The meetings came as Mount Prospect Park, where one of two skate parks are planned to be built, continues to stir up controversy within the community. Ever since Mayor Eric Adams first announced the project in January, there has been support and opposition
People formally shared their thoughts at the meetings and discussed the design of the Brooklyn Skate Garden, the 40,000 square foot park to be built at Mount Prospect Park.
While some support the initiative, groups like Friends of Mount Prospect Park feel the new addition will remove much needed green space.
The next meeting will take place on May 8 at 6 p.m. at Brower Park in Crown Heights.
The mayor's office says the two projects are part of a $24.8 million initiative aimed at making New York City the skate capital of the east coast. It's all thanks to a partnership with the Skate Park Project, which is a program ran by legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk.
The new parks are expected to be finished by 2027.
